About Our Team - the "straight shooters" our youth shotgun team offers 3 shooting sports programs in 3 different shotgun clay target shooting sports. these sports and programs are described below:
THE SHOTGUN “clay target” SPORTS
Trap shooting:
This sport involves shooting at clay targets at random angles starting 16-yards from the single trap house. 4-H, AIM, and SCTP competitive shooting at the local, state, and national
levels. Many SCTP and all AIM shoots are ATA registered; 4-H shoots are not.
SKEET
SHOOTING: This sport has a high house and a low house. You shoot clay targets as known angles from either the high, low of both houses. 4-H and SCTP competitive shooting at
the local, state, and national levels. The State and National SCTP skeet shoots
are NSSA registered; 4-H shoots aren’t.
SPORTING
CLAYS: Often called “golf with a shotgun”, Sporting
Clays is only offered by SCTP. Each range you go to has a different layout with different target presentations.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMS
You choose from any
of the following 3 programs:
4-H Shooting Sports - Shotgun:
For youth ages
12-19 the Club offers the shotgun sports of trap and skeet. Double Trap is also
offered at the county level. The Club holds practices on Thursday nights April
through early September. The State shoot is usually in August and the county
shoot is held in September before the St. Joseph County Grange Fair. A Fair
book still project is required for medal eligibility at the Fair.
Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP):
For youth in Grades 12 and under, a Scholastic Clay Target Program team
offers shotgun competition in trap, skeet, and/or sporting clays. The breakdown
of groups is below:
·Rookies: Grade 5 andunder
·Intermediate: Grade 6 - 8
·Senior: Grades 9-12
The team practices
concurrently with 4-H to allow youth to participate in both programs.SCTP has a “team” orientation versus an
individual orientation. However some individual awards are available. There are
optional competitions at the local, State, and National levels. We choose which
competitions we want to participate in. The National Shoot is currently held in
Sparta IL. There are also opportunities for Olympic “Bunker” Trap and Olympic
Skeet.
AIM – Trap Shooting from ATA:
AIM stands for
Academics, Integrity, and Marksmanship. This program is for youth shooters from
grade school through college age. Our Club offers this program for additional
optional competitive trap shooting opportunities with the ATA, the Amateur
Trapshooting Association.This program
offers individual, as well as, team awards.
Classification by “age group” for AIM
participants are as follows:
·11 and under - Presub
·12-14 - Sub-Junior
·15-18 - Junior
·19-23 - Senior**
**Senior Classification is for high school
grads that are pursuing either a career path or college. See coach for more
detail. ABOUT THE COACHES
All our shotgun
coaches are certified by either 4-H, NRA/USAS/CMP, ATA, or hold multiple
certifications. Most are also Hunter Education Instructors. The SCTP and 4-H
programs perform background checks on all coaches.
Leslie York, Head Coach: Leslie is an ATA and
NRA Level 2 Certified Shotgun Coach. She is also certified by 4-H and is a
Hunter Education instructor. She oversees the team organization, maintains the
proper paperwork, and is the main contact for the SCTP and AIM programs. She
shoots trap competitively.
Larry York, Assistant
Coach:
Larry is an ATA and NRA Level 1 shotgun coach. He is also certified by 4-H and
is a Hunter Education instructor. He also shoots trap competitively. His main
focus is on trap, but he is also well versed in skeet and sporting clays.
Bill Thompson,
Assistant Coach: Bill is an NRA Level 1 shotgun coach, is also certified
by 4-H, and is a Hunter Education Instructor. He shoots both trapand skeet. His focus is on both trap and
skeet.
Pete
Davis, Assistant Coach:Pete
is an SCTP shotgun coach and 4-H volunteer who assists with coaching both the
trap and skeet disciplines.
Ramze Idriss, Assistant Coach: Ramze has taken the NRA/USAS/CMP Level 1 coaching
class. He shoots both trap and skeet. His main coaching focus is skeet, but
also coaches trap.
